MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 5, 2015— For 16 years, the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) has recognized the individuals who made lasting contributions to technology innovation in Minnesota. At the 2015 Tekne Awards on November 18, the MHTA will present Kathleen O’Keefe with the Tekne Lifetime Achievement Award.
Before her work in Minnesota, O’Keefe taught at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Maryland. As a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) advocate, she focused on improving K-12 science education, helping write grants and assist businesses that support the improvement of teaching and learning programs. A PhD from Ohio State University in educational research and evaluation has continually informed her work.
O’Keefe became an integral part of the Minnesota technology community in 1992 when she joined the Medtronic Foundation. For 15 years she developed and managed the Science Education Program, which was recognized as a “Leader for Change” by the Council for Aid to Education. Further support of the technology community in Minnesota has come through board service with the MHTA Foundation and SciMathMN. She has also provided national support to STEM, serving on the boards of the Triangle Coalition for STEM and the National Association of State Science and Math Coalitions.
“STEM education has been enriched through Kay’s astounding commitment and service,” said Margaret Anderson Kelliher, president and CEO, MHTA. “She has spent a lifetime dedicated to improving everything from classroom activity to education policy. As a funder and longtime board member, she continues to offer a depth of knowledge that can only come from a lifetime of experience. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes her commitment and lasting impact.”
